Desktop app updates (Spec 2)

How the desktop app notifies you of and installs updates.

The Blue Painter desktop app (Mac, Windows, Linux) checks for updates when you launch it. If a newer version is available, you'll see a notification dialog.

When an update is available

A dialog will appear with three options:

  • Download now — Downloads the update in the background. When done, you'll get a "Restart now" prompt to apply it.
  • Download from website — Opens the download page in your browser so you can install manually.
  • Later — Dismisses the dialog. You can continue using the current version; the app will check again on next launch.

After the update downloads

When the update has finished downloading, a second dialog asks you to restart. Choose Restart now to apply the update immediately, or Later to keep working and restart when you're ready.

Update checks only run when you start the app. If you keep Blue Painter open for long periods, restart the app occasionally to pick up new versions.
